As we enter into world breastfeeding week, the first week of August, we would like to take the opportunity to highlight the significance of breastfeeding in our lives as Catholics. Since scripture is an important part of our Catholic faith, in this post we will highlight the importance and scriptural relevance of breastfeeding.
Even if you have spent a lot of time with Sacred Scripture, you may never have noted any mentions of breastfeeding. It is, however, mentioned numerous times throughout the Bible.
Here’s a few select passages:
Genesis 49:25 “By the God of your father who will help you, by the Almighty who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessing of the breasts and the womb.”
Psalm 22:9 “Yet you are he who took me from the womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breast.”
1 Peter 2:2 “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by you may grow up into salvation”
The verses all emphasize the significant bond between the nursing mother and her baby. Scripture uses this analogy to show God’s everlasting love for us - how he will love and care for us no matter what! Breastfeeding is a unique and profound experience for mothers to experience a natural sign of the divine here during our earthly life.
In our Whole Mission lactation classes, we explore scripture verses and other aspects of how our Catholic faith relates to sacrificial love through the breastfeeding and motherhood journey.
Our classes also share evidence based information on breastfeeding benefits, proper latching and positioning, navigating expectations, milk expression, weaning and more.
A special blessing on all nursing mothers and breastfeeding families during this world breastfeeding week. Our Lady of Leche, pray for us!
